Arcadia High School Girls Cross Country
Scoring

Low score wins as it does in golf. The object is to get as few points as possible. So, if Arcadia has 15 points and CV has 40, then Arcadia wins. In the race, the first place finisher is 1 point, second place is 2 points, and so on and so forth.

Scores are taken from the top five finishers even though teams have seven running in varsity and an unlmited number in other divisions. Let's say we have a meet and we get 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, and 13. CV gets 2, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, and 14. This will show how low score works and something else called displacement..

So here we have Arcadia winning with the low score, but if you notice, the 10th place isn't listed and it jumps straight to 11 in the scoring. The 10th place was displaced in that it wasn't used in the point total. This actually is an advantage to us in that it gives our opposition extra points if we can displace runners and gives us a better chance of winning. Also, if the score is tied, it goes to who had the better placement of the 6th and 7th runners.

A team can lock up a race (not invitation scoring) by getting the first three places. If you do that, it is impossible to lose in the scoring, even if the opposing team gets the next seven runners across. Let's take a look
As you can see, an extremely close race, but Arcadia squeeks out a 1 point victory. A win is a win after all.

The way our league meets work is that we have six schools competing. What the scorers do is they only look at the results of the two schools at a time and ignore the runners from the other schools. They go through each combination of schools and have results for each school versus the other. So after one meet, a team will have a record of 5-0, or 4-1, and so on. We are in the Pacific League and our teams we compete against are Crescenta Valley, Glendale, Hoover, Muir, and Pasadena.

Invitational scoring works a little different in that all the scores just get added up. So if you have a large gathering of athletes where there are 150 runners, it's not uncommon to see team scores well over 100 pts.

Awards -- No awards are given out at league meets or dual meets, but they are given out at invitationals. Usually it is in the form of a medal for an individual and a trophy for a team.
